Douglas and Lana met each other. They started thinking about renting an apartment and fell in love. Lana comes from a wealthy family, which is not the case with Douglas. So they don't pay the rent. Meanwhile, Douglas has to do other things to maintain his "investment" in family welfare, not 50/50.
